Can you grill in an air fryer? We examine the pros and cons in this article.

Air fryers have become extremely popular kitchen appliances in recent years. When we got one of these as a Christmas gift a few years ago, I was skeptical: "Oh great, another appliance to take up space on the counter".  But after using our Power XL Air Fryer a few times, I'm hooked on the ease of use and the easy cleanup.  It's almost as easy as a microwave, but better, IMHO.

These nifty machines use hot air to cook food quickly and efficiently, making them an attractive alternative to traditional deep frying. As more people are gravitating towards healthier lifestyles, air fryers are a great way to enjoy crispy foods without all the added grease and fat.

But what about grilling? Many people love the taste of grilled meats and vegetables, but don't want the hassle of dealing with an outdoor grill or the smoke associated with indoor grilling. This leads us to ask: Can you grill in an air fryer?

It's a valid question that doesn't have a straightforward answer. While air fryers can produce deliciously crispy foods, they simply aren't designed for grilling in the traditional sense. However, with a few tweaks and adjustments, it is possible to get some grilled flavor from your air-fried dishes. Let's explore how.

What is Grilling?

When we think of grilling, we typically picture cooking food over an open flame. This method of cooking has been around for centuries and is still one of the most popular ways to cook food today. Grilling involves cooking food on a grate or grill, which is placed over a heat source. The heat source can be gas, charcoal, or electricity.

Gas Grills

Gas grills are the most common type of grill found in backyards today. They are easy to use and offer a consistent heat source that can be adjusted with the turn of a knob. Gas grills typically come with multiple burners, which allow you to cook different types of food at different temperatures simultaneously.

Charcoal Grills

Charcoal grills are the traditional choice for outdoor cooking enthusiasts who love that smoky flavor in their food. Charcoal grilling involves igniting charcoal briquettes in a firebox or chimney starter until they become hot coals that will provide heat for cooking your food. Charcoal grills require more time and skill to use but offer that classic grilled flavor that many people crave.

Electric Grills

Electric grills are becoming increasingly popular because they can be used indoors or outdoors without producing any harmful fumes or smoke. They work by heating up heating elements located underneath the grill plate, which then radiates heat onto your food as it cooks. No matter what type of grill you prefer using, each has its own unique benefits and drawbacks when it comes to cooking certain types of foods.

How does an air fryer work?

Air fryers work by circulating hot air around food to cook it. They use a heating element and a fan to create this circulation of hot air, which results in food that is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The food sits in a basket that is exposed to the hot air, and the basket allows excess oil and fat to drip away from the food, resulting in healthier dishes.

The mechanism of an air fryer

The heating element of an air fryer heats up the air inside it, while the fan circulates this hot air around the food. The basket that holds the food rests on top of a drip tray that catches any excess oil or fat. Some models also have additional accessories like baking pans or skewers for more versatile cooking options.

Using an air fryer for cooking

One of the biggest benefits of using an air fryer for cooking is that it produces crispy, delicious results without added oil or fat. This makes it a healthier alternative to traditional frying methods. Air fryers are also typically faster than ovens, so they can save time when cooking certain dishes.

Additionally, they're easy to clean since there's no messy oil to deal with - the directions say just wipe down with a damp cloth after use, but I give the basket a hot water rinse and a few swipes of the soapy sponge after each use and we're good to go.

Plus, since they don't require much preheating like an oven does, you can start cooking your meal right away without wasting time waiting for your oven to heat up.  I just give it a minute or two to preheat and it's all good.

Can you grill in an air fryer?

Air fryers are a versatile kitchen appliance that can be used for cooking a range of foods, from chicken wings to french fries.

However, when it comes to grilling, there are some limitations to using an air fryer. While an air fryer can produce a crispy exterior on food, it doesn't have the same capability as a traditional grill when it comes to creating smoky flavor and char marks.

Limitations of using an air fryer for grilling

One limitation of using an air fryer for grilling is that the size of the cooking basket may not be large enough to accommodate larger cuts of meat or whole vegetables.

Additionally, since an air fryer circulates hot air around the food rather than cooking it over direct heat, it may not achieve the same level of charring that you can get with a traditional grill. While many people love the smoky flavor that comes from grilling outside with charcoal or wood chips, this is not something that can be replicated in an air fryer.

How to use an air fryer for grilling (temperature, time, etc.)

Despite these limitations, it is possible to use your air fryer for grilling certain types of foods. To do so successfully, start by preheating your air fryer to its highest temperature setting. Then add your food and cook it at this high temperature for a few minutes before reducing the temperature and continuing to cook until done. Be sure to flip your food halfway through cooking and keep a close eye on it to prevent burning or overcooking.

When using your air fryer for grilling meats like steak or pork chops, you may also want to add some liquid smoke or other seasonings to help replicate some of the flavors you would get from a traditional grill.

Remember, while you may not be able to replicate the exact flavors and textures of grilling with an air fryer, it can still be a great tool for cooking delicious and healthy meals quickly and easily.

When we did our experiment with a New York strip steak, we were short on time and my wife and I looked at each other and just said "why not?".  So we went for it. I did the preheating for a few minutes, seasoned the steak and dropped it in the air fryer basket.

I turned the steak after a few minutes and re-started the air fryer. It cooked fast, and was tasty, but just not the same as it would be if we had grilled it.  So it's a time saver, but not the real deal.  You have to make up for the fact that it's not grilled with seasonings and maybe some liquid smoke.  Otherwise, it was pretty dang easy.

Tips for Achieving Perfect Results

Grilling in an air fryer is more of a hybrid cooking technique that doesn't rely on the traditional heat sources. In order to achieve great results when grilling in an air fryer, you need to follow some specific tips.

Firstly, use a good quality meat that is cut in a way that allows it to cook evenly. Secondly, ensure the meat is at room temperature before grilling as this will help with even cooking throughout. Thirdly, ensure that you pat dry any excess moisture from the surface of the meat before seasoning it for grilling. This step is important because adding seasoning on a moist surface can lessen their effectiveness.

Remember with an Air Fryer it's important to flip your food halfway through the cooking process to make sure the cook is even.

Getting That Crispy Exterior and Juicy Interior

Achieving the perfect combination of crispy exterior and juicy interior when grilling in an air fryer requires careful attention to temperature and timing. Preheat the air fryer for at least 3 minutes before placing your food inside so that it starts cooking immediately once it's inserted into the unit.

The temperature should be set according to the type of meat being cooked with thicker cuts requiring lower temperatures and longer times than thinner cuts. For example, chicken breasts can be cooked at 375°F for 12-15 minutes per side while burgers require higher temperatures (400-425°F) and shorter cooking times of 8 minutes per side.

Once food has been inserted into the unit, resist opening up until after half-way through its cook time or flipping during cooking time as this breaks up any build-up of crust or browning on one side.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Now that you've enjoyed your delicious grilled food made with your air fryer let's talk cleaning up. After use, unplug your unit from electrical power source first then wait until it cools down completely before attempting to clean it off so as not to burn your hands. Then using a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap, wipe down the exterior and interior of your air fryer carefully ensuring that all food residue is removed.

Pay extra attention to the cooking basket, separating it from the base for thorough cleaning of any excess grease or fat. Allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before reassembling it again ready for your next cookout.
