Are you a fan of walleye fishing? If the answer is yes, then you absolutely need to head to Lake Erie.  With its rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty, it's no wonder that this Great Lake has become one of the world's premier destinations for anglers looking for some of the best walleye fishing anywhere.  The numbers are great, and you'll find many fish over 30 inches too.  If you're looking for your personal best walleye, then there's a good chance you'll find it in Lake Erie.

The Walleye Are Plentiful In Lake Erie And Can Be Easily Caught If You Know Where To Look

Walleye are a popular game fish, and they're relatively easy to catch if you know where to look. The best time to fish for walleye is in the spring and fall, when the water temperature is cooler. During these times of year, the walleye tend to congregate near the shore, making them easy to access.  In the spring, Walleye over 30" are very common the closer you get to Cleveland area, but really, you can catch big ones on virtually any part of the lake.

On our recent trip we chartered with Summer Bandit Charters, out of Oak Harbor, OH not far from the Davis-Besse power plant.  Captain Paul Coutcher did a great job of putting us on the fish, and getting us to our limit fairly quickly.

You can use artificial lures to catch walleye, but in reality, the best way to catch walleye is by using live bait, such as minnows or nightcrawlers. They're also attracted to brightly-colored lures. Our main method for our trip was a simple worm harness with crawlers.  We also tested Bio Bait's DNA 3.75" swimbait in the perch pattern.  It was a short test, because we were close to our limit, but within minutes of dropping the Bio Bait, big walleye had hammered them.  2 of the biggest walleye we caught that day were on the Bio Bait.

Captain Paul used outriggers and planar boards to make sure our lines didn't cross and they worked well.

Lake Erie Is Relatively Clear and Well-Oxygenated

Walleye are known for their tasty fillets, and sometimes they can put up quite a fight when hooked. Otherwise, quite frankly, they're like hooking into an old shoe.  If you're hoping to catch a walleye, regardless of where you fish, you'll want to head to a body of water that is clear and well-oxygenated. Fortunately, there are many lakes and rivers across the country that fit this description, and Lake Erie is one of them.

There Are Plenty Of Places To Find Shelter And Hide From Predators

When it comes to walleye fishing, one of the key things to remember is that these fish are survivors. They're able to withstand cold temperatures and low oxygen levels, and they've got plenty of places to hide from predators. As a result, walleye populations have remained stable even as other fish species have declined. That's good news for walleye anglers, who can enjoy excellent fishing opportunities throughout the year. So whether you're targeting walleye in the spring, summer or fall, keep in mind that these hardy fish are always up for a fight.

The Lake Is Large Enough That You Can Always Find A Spot That's Quiet

The lake is a great spot for walleye fishing. You can always find a quiet spot to fish, without too much boat traffic. The walleye bite is good early in the morning and late in the evening. Baitfish are plentiful, so you won't go home empty-handed.

The Scenery Is Beautiful, Especially In The Fall When The Leaves Change Color

Lake Erie is a beautiful destination for walleye fishing, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing color. The lake's shoreline is dotted with vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow, creating a stunning visual display of nature's beauty. This breathtaking scenery only enhances the experience of anglers looking to reel in some of Lake Erie's best walleye.

HOT TIP: If you do make a trip to Lake Erie, schedule an afternoon to take in the fun of Put-In-Bay. It's like Key West in the middle of Lake Erie!

Lake Erie is one of the best places to fish for walleye. The conditions are perfect for them to live and thrive, and there's plenty of food for them to eat. They're also relatively easy to catch, as long as you know where to look. And even if you don't catch any fish, you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery. So if you haven't gone fishing on Lake Erie yet, make sure you schedule a trip soon.
